Meet the Goats
Belle!
One of our newest additions – Hoffnant Belle, the little Anglo Nubian pedigree princess. She fancies herself an indoor goat since she got to hang out in the kitchen under a heat lamp. (She was born premature, and needed some special TLC…) Belle is the daughter of Teasel, our token Anglo Nubian. Her theme song is that pop classic, “I Whip My Ears Back and Forth,” and when she does, she causes a breeze! Like all really blue-blooded Anglo Nubians, her ears can touch in front of her nose. Belle was born March 4, 2012, and at the moment she’s just a tiny bit bigger than a rabbit, with incredibly silky fur and long, spindly legs. But check out those fantastic fishnet patterns on her gams! When you’re this cute, you don’t have to be well-behaved! Or so she tells us…
Bluejay
This is Hoffnant Bluejay, known as Blue. Blue was born Mar 9 , and is the daughter of one of our finest milker, Kattern Juliet. All of the goats born on our farm have a first name of Hoffnant, as that’s our herd name, after the Hoffnant River that runs close to our farm. Then the name that follows is an American place name (Mum Shann is American, Dad Rich is Welsh; that’s our compromise!) So the kids are named after a place in America, starting with a letter that goes with the year of kidding. Our first years were A’s – Alabama, Arkansas, etc… This year is the B year, thus Belle (short for Belair) Bluejay (yes, it’s a place in the US!) etc…
Blue is a purebred British Saanen. Saanens are originally from Switzerland – proper Heidi goats! They are calm, placid, practical goats – and they milk LOADS! One Saanen can produce as much as 5 litres of milk per day. As Rich says, “If they had fingers, they would milk themselves!” We have great hopes that Blue will grow up to be just as fantastic a milker as her mum…in about two years.
