Why movement matters: the risks of a sedentary lifestyle
Over the last ten or so years, there has been a rise in people using computers, smartphones, and streaming services, with the average person spending 42% of their waking time looking at a screen.1https://explodingtopics.com/blog/screen-time-stats (Yes, you read that right).
As technology advances, and life becomes more automated and convenient, you can do less strenuous work than you previously needed to. This raises the question – are these changes negatively impacting your health?
Screen time may be unavoidable; you may need a phone, computer, or tablet for work. There’s nothing wrong with chilling out and watching television, but balancing this time is crucial. With increased time scrolling through social media, playing video games, or streaming box sets comes a more sedentary way of life.
Let’s look at some of the health concerns associated with a sedentary lifestyle, and some simple changes that you can make to stay more active!
The effects of a sedentary lifestyle
An inactive lifestyle can affect various aspects of your physical and mental wellbeing. One of the biggest factors is the increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, including an increased likelihood of hypertension, heart disease, and strokes.
Lack of physical activity can lead to obesity, increasing health complications. Weight gain is associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes because decreased mobility contributes to insulin resistance and higher blood sugar levels. Inactivity can lead to muscle weakness, affecting movement and strength. It also leads to lower bone density, which can increase the chances of osteoporosis.
Aside from the physical toll, there is a higher chance of mental health concerns.2https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s12966-016-0432-4 The lack of activity can lead to feelings of lethargy and disengagement. This often contributes to heightened levels of stress and anxiety. Additionally, regular exercise releases endorphins and other chemicals in the brain. This promotes feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Without this, you can find yourself struggling with negative thoughts and emotions.
A more sedentary lifestyle can have specific effects on men, women, and children. Let’s explore these effects in more detail –
- Men – There is an increased risk of prostate cancer. It can also effect testosterone levels, as well as sperm count and quality.3https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30869154/
- Women – The risk of gestational diabetes during pregnancy increases.4https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6166569/ There is a higher likelihood of both breast5https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8221371/ and endometrial cancers.6https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2965881/
- Children – There is an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.7https://academic.oup.com/jcem/advance-article/doi/10.1210/clinem/dgae135/7619234?login=false Reduced activity can affect social skills. Inactivity and increased screen time can also impair a child’s cognition and development.8https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7451199/
Tips for living a more active life
There are several steps you can take to ensure you don’t fall into the traps of a sedentary lifestyle. Simple changes, such as setting aside time for exercise, can make a big difference. Walking, cycling, and different sports will boost your physical health. Exercising with others can be great socially, too!
If you have children, creating an active environment is essential. Outdoor play, such as going to parks, hiking, or taking part in sports can help develop a love for staying active. Teaching positive habits around technology and encouraging outdoor activities will reduce sedentary behaviour and improve their wellbeing.9https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6082791/
Finally, incorporating family-friendly routines can boost activity levels. Regular physical outings promote a healthy lifestyle for both parents and children. By prioritising an active lifestyle and limiting screen time, families can improve their physical and emotional health and engagement with the outdoor environment.
