The mighty Lion’s Mane: nature’s secret for nerve repair and brain health
You may or may not have heard the buzz around functional mushrooms and their potential health benefits. One standout in this space is Hericium erinaceus, better known as Lion’s Mane. Named for its large, white, shaggy appearance, this mushroom really does start to resemble a lion’s mane as it grows.

A staple of traditional medicine
Lion’s Mane has been used for centuries in Chinese and Japanese medicine to support kidney, liver, heart, and digestive health. Today, modern research is shining a spotlight on its potential to support brain health, especially in relation to neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, ischaemic strokes, and depression.
What makes Lion’s Mane so powerful?
This mushroom contains bioactive compounds called hericenones and erinacines, which have been shown in cell studies to increase nerve growth factor (NGF) – a key protein for the growth, maintenance, and survival of neurons.
Studies suggest Lion’s Mane may:
- Display anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and hypoglycaemic properties.
- Inhibit β-amyloid toxicity – a major factor in Alzheimer’s disease.
- Improve cognitive function and daily performance in people with mild cognitive impairment.1https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10650066/
What the research says
A study published in the Journal of Neurochemistry by researchers from the University of Queensland identified active compounds in Lion’s Mane that can boost nerve growth and enhance memory.2https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jnc.15767
In Alzheimer’s disease models, other studies have shown improvements in cognition and behaviour, enhanced neurogenesis (the formation of new neurons in the brain)3https://qbi.uq.edu.au/brain-basics/brain-physiology/what-neurogenesis#:~:text=Neurogenesis%20is%20the%20process%20by,birth%20and%20throughout%20our%20lifespan., and reduced neuroinflammation – plus a boost in key memory-supporting neurotransmitters.4https://www.mdpi.com/2218-273X/11/4/543
There’s also evidence that Lion’s Mane may have antidepressant-like effects, suggesting it could be a natural support option for mood disorders.5https://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/21/1/163
More than just brain support
Beyond its brain benefits, Lion’s Mane is also being studied for its potential to:
- Support cardiovascular health by reducing blood clot risk.
- Aid in healthy weight management.
- Contribute to immune system modulation.
It’s no wonder Lion’s Mane is earning its place as a rising superfood in the functional medicine world.
