Reasons to feel optimistic this February

After January’s long, frosty stretch, February arrives with a promise of brighter days. The first hints of spring peek through, daylight lingers a little longer, and little joys are waiting to be noticed.

There’s a sense of cyffro in the air—Welsh for excitement and joyful anticipation—as we enjoy the small wonders this month brings. Here are a few reasons to feel hopeful this February:

1. Snowdrops

Look for the first snowdrops pushing up through the frost. They’re always a treat! Those delicate white flowers are like tiny sparks of hope, quietly popping up to remind you that spring is just around the corner.

2. Crocuses

Get ready for little pops of purple, yellow, and white as crocuses start blooming in gardens and parks! Last year, Shann’s purple crocuses were absolutely show-stopping, and everyone at CGHQ got to soak in that tiny, magical burst of colour – pure joy!

3. Blossom

Soon, the first blossoms will show up on trees and shrubs. Soft pinks and whites begin to brighten the branches, marking a gentle but clear change in the garden.

4. Tulips and daffodils in shops

If your garden isn’t blooming yet, you can still bring spring into your home. Tulips and daffodils are popping up in shops, and a simple bunch can brighten any room. Note to self: don’t turn the house into a mini florist!

5. Pancake Day – hooray!

Pancake Day is almost here! No matter if you like your pancakes sweet, savoury, stacked high or kept simple, we follow the 80/20 rule at CG: mostly sensible, but always leaving space for a treat. Pancakes are meant to be enjoyed, after all. My favourite is lemon and sugar – it’s a classic I can never resist!

6. More daylight

By the end of February, we’ll gain almost two extra hours of daylight. Mornings feel brighter, evenings linger longer, and it makes a surprising difference in your mood. Extra daylight means more moments like this: Harper, Elly’s second daughter, enjoying the beach with Juno by her side—a small but perfect snapshot of joy.

February may still feel crisp and quiet, but there is still a lot to enjoy if you slow down and look around. Snowdrops, crocuses, blossoming trees, and even small treats like Pancake Day or a bright bouquet can lift spirits. There is a real sense of cyffro in the air, reminding us to notice the simple moments that make winter feel a bit lighter.

Keep going – brighter days are ahead!
