Why we still don’t talk about poop
Let’s start with the basics: everybody poops. So why is it still considered a taboo topic? Granted, it’s not the most glamorous subject, but where does this sense of embarrassment come from? If you’ve spent time around kids, you’ll know that fart jokes and poop humour are par for the course. But as we grow up, this type of humour tends to fade, and we’re often told it’s inappropriate to discuss openly. We’ve all tried to stifle a laugh when someone accidentally lets one slip—so what changes?
- Age – Children joking about poop is expected, but adults doing the same are often seen as immature.
- Gender – Men are generally more likely to talk about gut issues openly. A joke about last night’s curry might not be glamorous, but it’s a step toward normalising the conversation.
- Upbringing and culture – In many Western cultures, discussing poop is considered inappropriate, even among family. In some Asian cultures, however, it’s a completely normal topic, more about wellbeing than embarrassment.
Where does the embarrassment come from?
Historically, things were very different. In Roman times, using the toilet was almost a social event. People would sit side by side on communal benches called latrines, chatting while doing their business.
Today, many people feel anxious about public restrooms, tensing up at the sound of someone walking in, holding it in so no one hears them go. Even at the doctor’s office, patients may downplay symptoms to avoid sounding vulgar.
Talking about it, however, can be empowering. Sharing experiences reduces stigma, helps people feel less alone, and opens the door to discussing gut health more openly. With conditions like IBS affecting 5–10% of the global population,1https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10237074/ normalising these conversations can help spread awareness and support symptom management.
