What IS a gut health protocol, anyway?

Once you become a Friend of the Goats, you’ll hear a lot about our Gut Health Protocol.

But what does this actually mean?

Basically, a gut health protocol is a program that is designed to improve the condition of your gut microbiome. These days we keep it very simple and stream-lined, because over the years of helping thousands of people, we have discovered that offering confusing and complex dietary advice just doesn’t work.

So we boiled it down to the absolute essentials. These are all things that you add in to your diet, rather than take away. That’s no accident; we know that giving things up is tough, and you probably already have more than enough stress in your life without going on some sort of crazy prohibitive diet!

We’ve designed our protocol around a daily Gut Health Smoothie because it’s quick and easy. All of the elements can be tossed into a blender and whizzed up into a daily drink that will make you feel full, satisfisfied and replete with everything you need for good gut health.

The best news is that once you take these basic steps and begin to improve your gut health, you will naturally begin to eat less sugar and processed foods. Your gut bugs drive your cravings, through something called “the gut-brain connection’; heal your gut, and those healthy bugs will begin to steer you towards healthier food choices. Your sugar cravings will fade, and you’ll start to turn your nose up at the junk that you once found so hard to resist. Diet improvement occurs painlessly over time, as your gut health improves.

In order to kickstart that process, here’s are the elements of the protocol. Think of them as the four legs of your gut health table!

  1. Take a probiotic. Over time, the fragile good bugs inside your gut become damaged and depleted by stress, sugar, chemicals, antibiotics and pollution. You need to fight back proactively against that process by putting good bugs back into your microbiome. For this purpose we (along with ZOE) recommend Chuckling Goat Kefir, which is the most diverse and natural probiotic available on the market today. Because it is a traditionally fermented product, made with real, living kefir grains and non-allergenic goat milk (as opposed to other kefirs that might be made with powdered sachet products instead of living grains) kefir has a fantastically complex bio-matrix, packed with beneficial bacteria alive and thriving in their own health environment. This mimics as closely as possible the ideal state of affairs inside your gut. So think of the kefir as a little “seed bomb” that you toss into the garden of your gut, to restore the good flora and fauna that have been wiped out over time.
  2. Take a prebiotic. Why do you need a prebiotic? Because PREbiotics feed PRObiotics. They work together like bees and flowers, creating a mutually beneficial and thriving environment. If you’re drinking kefir but not taking the prebiotic, you’re putting good bugs into your system but not proving them with the food they need to thrive on an ongoing basis. Again, our recommendation is the one that we make here on the farm: Chuckling Goat Complete Prebiotic. We don’t just recommend it because we sell it; it’s actually the other way around. We designed it specifically for CG clients who were demanding a simple prebiotic solution, with as many natural prebiotic fibres as possible, that was still easy to ingest on a daily basis. Our Complete Prebiotic contains 18 different fibres and is perfectly designed to work alongside our kefir; it’s most diverse prebiotic available today. Just add a daily scoop to your kefir, toss in some fruit and whizz it up. Job done!
  3. Take fish collagen (if you’re over 30). Your body begins to lose collagen around the time you turn 30, and by the age of 50, you will no longer be producing any of your own collagen. The skin becomes thinner, drier, and less elastic. The loss of collagen leads to wrinkle formation on the parts of your body you can see. But what about the rest of you? As the amount of collagen decreases, other parts of your body suffer as well: Bones become weaker and more fragile, and cartilage wears out in joints, making it tough to stay active. Muscle function decreases, affecting mobility and balance. And inside your gut, the fragile lining becomes more difficult to repair, leading to rips and tears that can accumulate bacteria and lead to diverticulitis and inflammation. The answer? Add a scoop of Pure Fish Collagen to your daily Gut Health Smoothie. Our sustainable collagen is made from fish bones and skins that would otherwise be discarded. Fish collagen is absorbed up to 1.5 times more efficiently into the body and has superior bioavailability over bovine or porcine collagens. Since it’s absorbed more efficiently and enters the bloodstream more quickly, it’s considered the best collagen source for medicinal purposes.
  4. Take an antimicrobial vinegar. If you’ve ever had food poisoning, or suffered a skin, dental or hospital-acquired infection, you may have a layer of pathogenic biofilm still lingering inside your gut. These collections of harmful bacteria can be antibiotic-resistant and extremely hard to shift. Over time, your immune system may exhaust itself trying to get rid of these low-grade infections, and you will begin to experience autoimmune symptoms. The best way to determine whether you have a pathogen biofilm is to take a Microbiome Test. During your consultation, your Nutritional Therapist will recommend the correct vinegar that has been lab-tested to remediate the pathogens in your system. These vinegars are all natural combinations of raw apple cider vinegar with the mother, steeped with antimicrobial herbs, and are hand-made by our sister company Ana’s Farmacy. For maximum digestive impact, we recommend taking 10 ml of vinegar in 40 ml of water, 30 minutes before your largest meal.
  5. Add an optional tincture. We’re big fans of harnessing the power of nature to do healing work for the body, and herbal tinctures are powerhouse! We recommend tinctures because of their super-effectiveness – they are the fastest and most streamlined way to get results. If you’re tired, try Siberian Ginseng. For anxiety, it’s Ashwagandha. For hormonal imbalance, we recommend Shatavari. And for inflammation, it’s Boswellia Serrata. If you take a Microbiome Test and it turns up a biofilm pathogen infection that may be lingering in your gut after a historical bout of food poisoning, dental infection, skin infection or UTI, your Nutritional Therapist will recommend the appropriate tincture to inhibit this specific pathogen.

And that’s all there is to it!

Of course, if you’re working with a skin issue, you can also add our therapeutic probiotic soaps and lotions to your skincare routine. These are great for eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and acne – or just a good choice if you want to “green up” your skincare and eliminate harmful dyes, perfumes and petrochemicals from your beauty routine.

You could also dabble with our range of teas all-natural herbal teas, which are designed to help you over bumps in the road that you may encounter during your gut health journey. For example, Sing Me to Sleep Tea does exactly what it says on the tin! Likewise Get Me Through the Day Tea helps perk up your mood and improve brain function, all without caffeine. Skin Rescue Tea, Tummy Tea and Gut Cleanse Tea all support the processes that their names suggest.

Here at Chuckling Goat, we believe in harnessing the power of nature to create wellness. Our gut health protocol works. If it didn’t, we would’t have earned our Trustpilot rating of an amazing 4.9 out of 5, with more than 5,000 reviews. So ditch those nasty chemicals, and join us on the road to health today!
