The New Year is approaching, and with that comes ‘resolutions’. You’ll likely take this time to look back at the past 12 months. You’re thinking about what went well, and what went.. not so well. You might think about big things you want to do or change the following year. This could be cutting out bad habits, improving your diet, getting fitter, changing jobs, or taking on new hobbies and experiences.
Whatever your goals may be, they can be daunting. It can be easy to get anxious and stop before you’ve even really started. Here are some great ways you can keep your goals achievable and stay on top of them in the New Year.
- Keep them personal – There’s nothing wrong with telling some of your friends or family that you are trying something new, or that you are improving some aspects of your life. It’s great to have that support behind you. However, it’s best to tell those who will support you, and provide positive feedback.
- Limit social media updates – Sharing your goals or journey with a broad range of people via social media can be motivating. However, it can sometimes put pressure on you to never faulter, or to succeed in your goals for the benefit of others. This goes against the reason for doing it in the first place.
- Keep your goals realistic – This doesn’t mean your goals can’t be big or life-changing! But it’s important for them to be reachable. Break bigger goals down into smaller steps, even if it means taking a bit longer to achieve.
- Lifestyle over fads – ‘New Year’ diets and fitness routines always sound good, but can be very hard to stick to. You will get fatigued and fed up quickly, leading to less motivation. If you’re aiming to lose weight or get fitter, this requires a long-term approach. Follow manageable routines that can be done at an enjoyable pace. Make food choices that are nutritious and delicious. This may take longer to show results, but those results will stick, and you will feel much better in the long run.
- Check-ins – Think about what you’ve done so far. What needs to be done to achieve your goals? Take time to slow down, process, and reflect on how you’re feeling. It’s never too late to reevaluate or make changes to your plans to ensure you still hit your goals.
- Don’t be perfect – Life is full of demands, from work and daily tasks to spending time with friends and family. There will be moments when you need to adjust your plans, and that’s okay. Maybe you skipped a workout after weeks of consistency, gave in to a takeaway when you were trying to eat healthier, or had a cigarette after months of not smoking. Don’t let these moments derail your confidence or motivation. Progress, not perfection, is what truly matters.
