If you’re a Friend of the Goats, you already know about probiotics (live microorganisms, such as bacteria and yeast, which confer health benefits to the host when consumed in adequate amounts).
And you’ve heard all about prebiotics (non-digestible dietary fibers, that can stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the gut).
But what about SYNBIOTICS?
What is a synbiotic?
Scientists have recently defined synbiotics as “a mixture of probiotics and prebiotics that beneficially affects the host by improving the survival and activity of beneficial microorganisms in the gut.”1https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/immunology-and-microbiology/synbiotics Synbiotics have been associated with various health benefits, including improved gut health, enhanced immune function, and reduced inflammation.
Put simply, synbiotic = prebiotic + probiotic.
The term “synbiotic” is derived from the synergy that exists between probiotics and prebiotics when they are consumed together. By combining these two elements, synbiotics improve the survival and colonization of probiotics in the gut while also providing a nutrient source for them to thrive.
To land this concept, just think of bees and flowers. The probiotics are like the bees – living, beneficial organisms that benefit your internal environment. The prebiotics are like the flowers – necessary to feed the bees and keep them going. Stronger together! In combination, they create a blooming, buzzing ecosystem in which diverse, healthy growth can occur.
Why do you need a synbiotic?
The microbes in your gut are strongly influenced by your environment, diet, medication use, stress levels and exercise. Depletion of beneficial bacteria due to an unhealthy diet or high antibiotic intake can upset the delicate balance of your gut microbiome and allow the growth of less desirable micro-organisms. Think of weeds taking over your garden!
Using a synbiotic ensures that the probiotics you consume have their own food source inside your gut, protecting both your investment and the maintenance of your good gut health. This is like planting a green cover crop – filling the space with beneficial growth so that opportunistic weeds can’t take hold.
Where can you find a synbiotic?
