Should I Stop Drinking Kefir If I Have Diarrhoea?
This depends on why you’re experiencing diarrhoea.
If you have a severe stomach bug, are becoming dehydrated, or have bloody diarrhoea, your first priority should be to seek appropriate medical advice and stay well hydrated.
But many people ask me this question because they’ve developed diarrhoea after antibiotics or because they’ve been living with recurring digestive problems.
In those situations, I encourage people to think about what’s happening underneath.
Your gut has been disrupted.
The question isn’t simply how to stop the symptoms today.
It’s how to help your gut recover over the coming weeks.
Sometimes people also experience temporary changes in their bowel habit when they first introduce kefir.
If that happens, don’t panic.
Slow down rather than stopping altogether.
Reduce your intake to 1 tablespoon (15 ml) each day for a week, then increase gradually to 2 tablespoons (30 ml) for the following week, continuing slowly until you reach the full daily serving of 170 ml.
