Let’s be real, parents are juggling all of the things – young children, school activities, work, cleaning, washing, cooking. Does the to-do list ever really end? It can be easy to get bogged down in the never-ending tasks. But I am here to tell you these years are precious and fleeting. It’s time to prioritise your family and forget the stuff that can wait!
Here are four ways to beat the chaos and embrace quality family time –
1. Spend quality time together on the evenings and weekends
If you are a working parent or your children are school-aged, you suddenly realise your time together is limited. It’s easy to fall into the routine of homework, food, bath time, and bedtime on weeknights. And weekends might not feel much better! They are often filled with sports activities, birthday parties, laundry, and food shopping. These things are often essential, but it’s also crucial to add some quality time in.
Activities for the whole family to enjoy:
- Games night – a great way to switch off, laugh and connect. Dig out the game box and have some fun!
- Movie night – grab some popcorn, get cosy and turn on your favourite films. It’s a great way to relax and re-group after time apart.
- Spend time outdoors – no matter the weather, get outside! Spending time in nature can improve mood, reduce stress levels, and support relaxation.1https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/tips-for-everyday-living/nature-and-mental-health/how-nature-benefits-mental-health/ This supports your family’s mental wellness!
- Talk – this might seem obvious, but set some time aside to communicate without distractions. Talking allows family members to share and connect.
- Start a project together – this can include crafting, a jigsaw, cooking, baking, or gardening. Whatever ignites your and your child’s creative sides, do it!
- Read – getting lost in a story with your children is the perfect form of escapism. Reading is a great way to connect, inspire young imaginations and build reading skills. Go to the charity shop and have a rummage for some old books that are in need a new home.
2. Outsource as much as you can
I’m here to tell you, it’s OK to get a cleaner. If this is an option for you and it’s going to lighten your load, go for it! If hiring a cleaner isn’t doable, ask for help from your partner or children. Tasks can often be shared. The whole family needs to play a role in keeping on top of household duties. Children love to help, and it also gives them purpose. Remember, sharing the load will get the jobs done quicker, giving you more time to spend on the fun stuff.
Food shopping is also a great task to outsource because it’s time-consuming. If possible, opt for online shopping and delivery, which will save you time and energy.
3. Remember, it really does take a village! Lean on your loved ones for help
If you need help, ask! Repeat after me – I am not superhuman, and I am juggling a lot! There is no shame in needing or asking for help. Sometimes, asking for help means, in the long run, you get more quality time with your children.
If you need child-free time to manage work, your to-do list, or general life admin, ask. Family and friends understand how much parents of young children are juggling and often would love to help!
4. Prioritise self-care
Remember, if you are not ok, those around you won’t be either. Looking after yourself is so important. Unfortunately, parents often neglect themselves in order to look after their children. But this is counter-productive! You have to look after your own needs too.
Five self-care ideas:
- Nourish your body! By nourishing your body with healthy food and movement you subconsciously tell yourself that you matter. You also feel better! Top tip: look after your gut microbes, and they will look after you! Our Gut Health Protocol is a non-negotiable for feeling your best. - Take a hot bath and relax.
- Read a good book with a delicious cup of herbal tea.
- Practice mindfulness – meditation, breathwork, journaling. Find a practice that brings you peace and regularly incorporate it into your life.
- Book a spa day or massage – I’m here to tell you that you deserve a guilt-free pamper!
Whatever it is, find something that fills your cup up, and do it! No excuses, you are important too.
