The little shed that could!

There’s something special about a space that keeps reinventing itself.

Ana’s art studio, now filled with creativity and artistic inspiration, was originally my grandfather, Taid’s, potting shed many moons ago. Long before canvases and paintbrushes, it was his sanctuary – a space where he would spend hours smoking his pipe, surrounded by towers of terracotta pots, compost, seeds, and rows of tiny tomato plants. He had a real love for growing things, especially tomatoes.

And he really did love his tomatoes.

One of my favourite memories of him is his classic tomato sandwich ritual: slices of juicy, homegrown tomatoes piled onto bakery bread, dripping with malt vinegar, and topped with a good sprinkle of salt. Simple, slightly soggy, and absolutely perfect.

When Shann’s mother, Ana, made the big move from California, Dad (Rich) gave the old potting shed a new lease of life. With plenty of love and hard work, he carefully renovated the space, adding a big window that frames the garden beyond, allowing Ana to enjoy the changing seasons, watch the leaves turn on the trees, and see the chickens pecking away outside as she works.

There’s something so lovely about that continuity. The shed may have swapped tomato plants for art supplies, but it’s still very much a place of growth and joy. It makes me a bit emotional, truth be told! The little shed that could!

And maybe that’s something we can all recognise in our own life – spaces and places that change purpose over time, but somehow keep their spirit. A childhood room, a kitchen table, a workshop, or a corner of a garden that’s witnessed different chapters of life around it unfold.

Do you have a place like that – one that’s shifted and evolved, but still somehow feels familiar the moment you step back into it?

From Taid’s tomatoes to Ana’s artwork, this little studio has remained a cherished space – just with slightly less compost and a little more paint!
