7 hidden habits that are irritating your skin

You’ve changed your moisturiser. Switched washing powder. Bought the fancy cream. And yet… your skin is still dry, itchy, flaky or reactive. Frustratingly familiar?

Sometimes, it isn’t your skincare that’s the problem – it’s the small daily habits quietly wearing down your skin barrier. Over-washing, hot showers, synthetic fabrics, and harsh household products can gradually tip sensitive skin into irritation mode.

The good news? Once you spot the triggers, skin often becomes much easier to manage.

What is the skin barrier & why does it matter?

Your skin barrier is your body’s outer protective layer. It helps keep moisture in and irritants out.

When it becomes compromised, skin is more likely to feel:

  • Dry
  • Tight
  • Itchy
  • Red
  • Reactive
  • Flaky

A damaged skin barrier is closely linked with conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and sensitive skin. The skin barrier relies on healthy lipids, hydration and a balanced microbiome to function properly.1https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/

Hidden skin irritants in your routine

Sometimes irritation builds slowly, so the trigger isn’t obvious. Here are some common culprits:

1. Over-cleansing (more is not always better!)

Many people think squeaky clean = healthy skin.

Frequent washing – especially with harsh soaps or foaming cleansers – can strip the skin of its natural oils and disrupt the barrier, increasing dryness and irritation.2https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

This is especially common if you:

  • Shower twice daily
  • Wash your hands constantly
  • Use strong fragranced products
  • Cleanse even when skin doesn’t need it

A better approach: cleanse gently, not aggressively. Our natural goat’s milk kefir soaps are designed to cleanse without leaving skin feeling stripped or tight.

2. Too many skincare products

Some products promise glowing skin… while quietly irritating it. When skin is reactive, complexity is often the problem, not the solution.

Strong exfoliating acids, high-strength retinoids, alcohol-heavy toners, and heavily fragranced formulas can all disrupt the skin barrier when overused. Layering too many products at once can make things worse, especially when active ingredients overlap. This can lead to redness, burning, tightness, flaking, breakouts and reactive “angry” skin.

Repeated exposure to irritating ingredients can weaken the skin barrier and increase sensitivity.3https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/

Sometimes your skin doesn’t need a 10-step routine – it needs simplicity. Choose products that support the barrier, not constantly challenge it. A mild cleanser, moisturiser, SPF (daytime), and one active product only if needed. Check out our natural skincare range, designed to strengthen and soothe your skin.

Less layering. Less irritation. More calm.

3. Hot showers: lovely for the soul, not always for the skin

We get it – a steaming shower after a long day feels glorious, but it can strip protective skin oils and increase water loss, leaving skin drier and more reactive afterwards.4https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/

If your skin feels worse after bathing or showering, this may be why.

Try:

  • Warm rather than hot water
  • Shorter showers
  • Moisturising immediately afterwards

Our kefir lotions and sensitive balm are ideal after bathing, helping to lock moisture into damp skin.

4. Friction, fabrics & constant rubbing

Your skin notices what you wear. Rough fabrics, tight clothing, scratchy labels, sweaty activewear or constant rubbing can all aggravate sensitive skin.

Common triggers include:

  • Wool
  • Tight leggings
  • Synthetic fabrics
  • Overheated clothing
  • Rough towels

Switch to:

  • Soft cotton or breathable natural fibres
  • Pat skin dry rather than rubbing
  • Loose clothing where possible

5. Household products may be making things worse

Sometimes the trigger isn’t what you put on your skin, it’s the environment around it.

Laundry detergents, fabric softeners, air fresheners, cleaning sprays, and fragranced candles can all leave residues or airborne irritants that sensitive skin reacts to.

Fragrance chemicals are a common cause of skin irritation and contact dermatitis.5https://link.springer.com/article/

Worth checking:

  • Washing powder
  • Fabric conditioner
  • Cleaning sprays
  • Scented room products

6. Stress can show up on your skin

Ever notice the itching gets worse when you’re stressed? Stress can impair skin barrier function, increase inflammation and worsen itch-scratch cycles.6https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/

Your skin and nervous system are closely connected.

Support your system with:

Try our Skin Rescue Tea, made with calming botanicals, such as yarrow root, chickweed leaf, nettle leaf, chamomile flowers, and calendula petals. A soothing daily ritual to support your skin.

7. The gut-skin connection

Skin issues don’t always start on the skin.

Research increasingly supports a gut-skin axis, where microbiome balance, inflammation, and digestion may influence skin health.7https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/microbiology/

If your skin is persistently reactive, dry or inflamed, internal support is a smart place to start. One of the best ways to support your skin from within is with our Gut Health Protocol:

  • Kefir: A natural source of beneficial bacteria to support microbiome balance.
  • Complete Prebiotic: Feeds beneficial gut microbes with a diverse range of fibres.
  • Collagen: Provides key amino acids that help support skin structure and the gut lining.

Together, they help support your skin from the inside out.

Sometimes it’s not about finding a “stronger” cream – it’s about removing the little things that quitely stress the barrier.

When you support your skin barrier, stress levels, microbiome, hydration and daily habits, your skin will become calmer, happier and easier to live in.
