Complete Prebiotic: What to expect in the first few weeks

Starting a prebiotic can bring noticeable changes, especially during the first few weeks.

Why am I suddenly more gassy? Is it normal that my stools have changed? How long before I notice a difference?

These are some of the most common questions we hear from customers who start taking the Complete Prebiotic. In most cases, these changes are a normal sign that your gut bacteria have more fibre to ferment as your microbiome begins to adapt.

Unlike probiotics, which introduce beneficial bacteria into your gut, prebiotics feed the beneficial bacteria already living there.1https://www.nature.com/articles/ As these microbes ferment the fibres, they produce compounds called postbiotics – including short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) – that don’t just support your gut, but many other systems throughout the body.2https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/

Here’s what you might notice during the first few weeks of taking Chuckling Goat’s Complete Prebiotic…

First things first: Your friendly gut bugs are getting a good meal!

Different gut bacteria prefer different foods.3https://www.cell.com/cell-host-microbe/

Our Complete Prebiotic wasn’t created by chance. It contains carefully selected ingredients to make 18 different fibres, providing a broad diversity of plant fibres that nourish a wide range of beneficial bacteria.

Think of it like planting a diverse garden.

The more variety you provide, the more diverse and resilient your microbiome can become.4https://www.nature.com/articles/

As beneficial bacteria ferment these fibres, they produce SCFAs such as butyrate, acetate and propionate – powerful compounds that nourish the cells lining your colon, help support the gut barrier and communicate with the immune system, brain and metabolism.5https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/immunology/articles/6https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

You may notice improvements in digestion…

One of the first things many people notice is that their digestion feels more predictable. You may experience:

That’s because fibre adds bulk to stools while also helping beneficial microbes produce compounds that support normal bowel function.

For people with looser stools and diarrhoea, increasing soluble fibres may also help improve stool consistency over time.9https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/ Read more on the benefits of prebiotics here.

Your gut bacteria start producing beneficial compounds

Perhaps the biggest benefit isn’t the fibre itself – it’s what your microbes make from it.

As beneficial bacteria ferment prebiotic fibres, they produce SCFAs that have been associated with:

It’s one of the reasons scientists now consider the microbiome to influence almost every organ system in the body.

Benefits beyond digestion

Because your gut is connected to so many aspects of health, some people notice improvements that go well beyond their toilet habits.

These may include:

  • Feeling more energised
  • Better mental wellbeing
  • Improved resilience to stress
  • Healthier-looking skin
  • Feeling less sluggish after meals
  • Improved overall wellbeing

In fact, our own research on Chuckling Goat’s synbiotic (combining kefir with Complete Prebiotic) found improvements in wellbeing, daytime alertness and reduced fatigue, alongside increased production of beneficial SCFAs and other anti-inflammatory microbial compounds.15chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/ These findings support what we’re seeing every day from customers – when you nourish your microbes properly, the benefits can extend well beyond digestion.

Of course, everyone’s microbiome is unique, so changes you notice – and how quickly you notice them – will vary from person to person.

What about gas and bloating?

This is probably the question we hear most often.

Yes – it can happen. And in many cases, it’s completely normal.

When you suddenly increase your fibre intake, your gut bacteria begin fermenting more fibre than they’re used to. Fermentation naturally produces gases such as hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide, which can temporarily lead to:16https://www.mdpi.com/2072

This doesn’t necessarily mean the prebiotic isn’t agreeing with you. Often, it’s simply your microbiome adapting to a richer, more diverse food supply.

Many people find these symptoms settle as their gut microbes adjust.

That’s why we recommend starting slowly

More isn’t always better – especially at the beginning.

Starting with a small amount gives your microbiome time to adapt to the increase in fibre. As your beneficial bacteria begin fermenting these new fibres, these temporary changes usually settle as your gut adjusts.

That’s why we recommend introducing the Complete Prebiotic gradually and increasing the amount over time. If you’re unsure how to get started, read our step-by-step guide: How to introduce Complete Prebiotic.

We give the same advice with our live kefir too; read more in our article What’s the best way to take kefir without side effects?

Everyone is different, so listen to your body and gradually build up to the full dose.

Slow and steady always wins.

How long does it take to notice a difference?

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

Some people notice changes within just a few days, particularly improvements in bowel regularity. For others, it can take 2-8 weeks for the microbiome to adapt and for more noticeable changes to develop.

Factors such as your starting fibre intake, current gut health, diet, lifestyle and existing microbiome all influence how quickly you’ll respond.

Remember, building a healthier microbiome is a marathon, not a sprint.

What if symptoms don’t settle?

While temporary gas and bloating are common when increasing fibre intake, they shouldn’t feel severe or continue indefinitely. If symptoms persist after several weeks:

  • Reduce the amount you’re taking and increase more gradually
  • Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water
  • Continue eating a varied, whole-food diet

Sometimes your gut simply needs a little more time – or a slightly slower approach. If anything feels worse, rather than better, it’s best to consult a doctor to check for any underlying issues.

For even better results…

Prebiotics feed bacteria – but first you need beneficial bacteria to feed.

That’s why we recommend combining Complete Prebiotic with our traditionally fermented kefir as part of our Gut Health Protocol. Together they:

  • Kefir – introduces beneficial microbes
  • Complete Prebiotic – feeds those microbes with 18 different fibres
  • Complete Postbiotic – provides beneficial microbial compounds produced during fermentation, like the SCFAs

Together, they help create a healthier, more resilient gut ecosystem.

The bottom line

Starting the Complete Prebiotic is a bit like opening a buffet for your beneficial gut bacteria. At first, they may get a little overexcited – and that can mean a few extra rumbles or trips to the loo while your microbiome adjusts.

But over time, you’re supporting something much bigger than digestion.

You’re helping nourish the trillions of microbes that influence your gut, immune system, metabolism, brain and overall wellbeing.

Sometimes, a little extra wind is simply the sound of your microbiome getting back to work.
