Collectively known as the gut microbiome, these microbes help digest food, produce essential vitamins, support the immune system, communicate with the brain and influence many aspects of overall health.

The fascinating part? Your microbiome isn’t fixed. It develops from the moment you’re born and continues adapting throughout every stage of life.

Here’s how your gut microbiome changes from infancy to older age – and why those changes matter.

The beginning: Birth & babyhood

The first year of life is one of the most important chapters in your microbiome’s story. During these first 12 months, your gut transforms from a relatively blank canvas into a thriving ecosystem of microbes that will help shape your health for years to come.

During vaginal birth, babies are exposed to microbes from their mother’s birth canal and gut. Babies born by Caesarean section tend to acquire more microbes from the surrounding environment and skin. Feeding also plays a major role.

In effect, breast milk feeds the microbes that help protect and develop the infant gut.

By around six months, introducing solid foods brings an explosion in microbial diversity as the gut adapts to digest a much wider range of foods.

Children who eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and other fibre-rich foods tend to develop a richer microbial community than those eating diets high in ultra-processed foods and low in fibre.

This diversity matters because different microbes perform different jobs. Some specialise in breaking down fibre into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) – beneficial compounds that nourish the gut lining, help regulate inflammation and support a healthy immune system.

The teenage years: Hormones meet the microbiome

Puberty is another period of major change for the gut microbiome. As hormone levels rise, the community of microbes living in the gut adapts too.

Sex hormones such as oestrogen and testosterone help shape which microbes thrive. Teenagers often experience:

Adolescence is also a key period for research into the gut-brain axis – the constant two-way communication between the gut and the brain. Adulthood: Finding its rhythm

By adulthood, your microbiome has found its rhythm. Although the adult microbiome is generally more stable than during childhood, it remains highly responsive to everyday life. Diet, exercise, sleep quality, stress, medications, illness and alcohol consumption all influence the balance of microbes living in your gut.

While one meal won’t permanently transform your microbiome, your long-term habits can have a meaningful impact. Research shows that the gut microbiome can begin responding to changes in diet within as little as 24–48 hours. A diet rich in a wide variety of plant foods provides the fibre that beneficial microbes ferment into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) – compounds that help nourish the gut lining, regulate inflammation and support overall gut health.
