Struggling with the taste of kefir? Try this!

Do you love the sharp, tangy taste of real kefir or do you find yourself grimacing as you take your daily dose each morning?! We get it! But rest assured, with these top tips, you will grow to love your daily gut-health ritual, knowing it’s doing you the world of good!

This article gives you practical ideas on how to make your kefir taste great and continue on your journey to good gut health. Firstly, let’s look at what makes our kefir so beneficial and how it comes to have such a distinctive taste…

The best kefir comes from goat’s milk and real grains and our kefir is the most diverse and natural probiotic available on the market today. Chuckling Goat Kefir is left to ferment for a minimum of 36 hours – during this time, the kefir grains do their amazing work, consuming all the lactose in the milk and populating it with 27 strains of naturally occurring beneficial live bacteria.

We leave our kefir unflavoured so that sweeteners don’t harm the good bugs – as a result, its natural taste is tart and tangy, like fizzy feta. What you’re tasting there is natural butyric acid – this is the same sharp flavour found in parmesan cheese.

Butyric acid, also known as butyrate, is a short-chain fatty acid and a powerful anti-inflammatory that’s created when the good bacteria in your gut break down dietary fibre. 1https://www.healthline.com/health/butyric-acid It’s extremely beneficial, not only for your gut but the whole body – however, it does add a certain tanginess to the flavour!

Some of our customers struggle with this sharp taste to begin with, however, they also know that our gut health protocol works so it’s worth finding a way to manage the taste!

Whether you blend it up in a smoothie with fruit, add a few drops of pure stevia or like me, just knock it back, the benefits are so far-reaching it’s worth persevering. As Shann discusses in her article What IS a gut health protocol, anyway?, as your gut health improves, you’ll find your taste buds will adapt.

In the meantime, here are tips from our gut health experts on how they drink their kefir –

El Armstrong (Creative Director)
Years ago, I’d just knock it back and get it over and done with but since adding more products, such as the Fish Collagen, Complete Prebiotic and Ashwagandha, I blend them all into a smoothie with a really ripe banana. Quick, and easy, and the banana adds just enough sweetness for me.

Emily Thomas (Customer Support Specialist)
I’d say adding banana definitely helps to start with but I actually don’t like banana in it anymore as it makes it too sweet! I like to mix up my smoothies for a bit of variety. My new favourite is Tropical Green.

Daisy Gray (Customer Support Specialist)
I used to knock it back, but now I absolutely love it. I do love a good Kefir smoothie though!

Claire Toomey (Nutritional Therapist/Customer Support Specialist)

I don’t like cheese other than on pizza 😉 so I was worried about the whole ‘same sharp flavour found in parmesan cheese’ description. So I mix my kefir with strawberry-flavoured protein powder plus frozen banana and berries.

Jenni Kiddle (Nutritional Therapist/Customer Support Specialist)
I genuinely really enjoy it as it is! I drink it first thing every morning 🙂

Saskia Knight (Nutritional Therapist/Customer Support Specialist)

I’ve never liked dairy apart from cheese so I just knock it back in one go, followed by a slurp of fruit smoothie or water! I see it as medicine and feeling the difference in my health is worth the taste!

Ceris Colven (Director of Customer Relations)

I like smoothies so I mix my kefir with a banana and blueberries, or if I don’t have much time, I just gulp it down!
